Elections for 2012

  • Primary Election and Statewide Constitutional Amendment One: May 8
  • General Election: November 6

Find your district and polling location in three easy steps:
1) Click here to visit the NC Board of Elections website.
2)Enter your name as directed, then click "Submit."
3)Your Polling Location will automatically be displayed. Click "My Districts"to view your Congressional district number as well as your state legislative districts and your county commissioner districts.

Voter Registration

To be eligible to vote in North Carolina, you must:
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be 18 years old by the date of a general election
  • Be a legal resident of Buncombe County and North Carolina for 30 days by the date of the next election
  • Have had citizenship rights restored, if ever convicted of a felony

  • Any change of party must be made at least 25 calendar days before an election; other changes may be made any time, including election day, without affecting the right to vote. In North Carolina, you may also register and vote during One-Stop Registration and Absentee Voting period, which begins 19 days before an election and ends the Saturday before the election.

Registration forms are available by mail or at any library in the Asheville/Buncombe Library System and all of the following agencies:

Social Services (Work First, Food Stamps, Medicaid, Services for the Blind); Department of Health (Women, Infants and Children/WIC); Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services; Vocational Rehab; Governor's Advocacy Council for Persons with Disabilities; Employment Security Commission; Department of Motor Vehicles (when conducting official business)

BALLOT INFORMATION

Odd-Numbered Years: Nonpartisan elections are held in November for municipal officials. Primary elections are held for nonpartisan municipal elections the 4th Tuesday before the general election.

Even-Numbered Years: Elections are held in November for federal, state, and county officials and the Buncombe County School Board. Primary elections are held on the Tuesday following the first Monday in May to select party nominees for the general elections.
